Possessing knitting skills allows knitters to add functional and original accessories. Such a universal item as mittens can serve as a substitute for traditional gloves, both for the craftswoman herself and her family members. In addition, this is a great option for a gift.

There are several ways in which you can make mitts with knitting needles:

  • classical method (horizontal finger placement);
  • wedge-shaped extension for the thumb;
  • vertical position of the thumb.

Often, the basic principle of knitting remains unchanged, and only the method of forming the thumb is modified. The only exceptions are those patterns that offer knitting fabric on two knitting needles.

To knit fingerless gloves, you can use thick or openwork patterns, and also vary the length of the cuff of the product at your discretion.

What you need to know before you start knitting

Before knitting the mitts, you need to take a few measurements:

  • A – distance in centimeters from the line of the base of the wrist to the thumb;
  • B – length of the palm from the wrist to the beginning of the fingers;
  • C – the width of the palm above the thumb (measured in a circle);
  • D – thumb circumference.

To make mitts with your own hands, you will need knitting needles for circular knitting (a set of five pieces), yarn, an auxiliary knitting needle or a pin.

Classic way

The popularity of this method of knitting mitts is based on the relative ease of forming the thumb. Detail Master a class demonstrating this method is shown in the video below. This video will be useful for anyone interested in knitting mitts, especially beginner knitters. Having tried to knit mitts or leggings, proceed to more complex knitting, for example: or socks. Delight will not keep you waiting.

Video: Lesson on knitting short mitts

Mittens with wedge-shaped extension

This method of forming a thumb is based on the same principle as the previous one: transferring part of the loops to an auxiliary tool and then adding loops. The difference lies in the configuration of the finished product, which more closely matches the anatomical shape of the palm.

The master class below includes step by step instructions on creating mitts. A description of how to make such mitts with knitting needles should start with a set required quantity loops and distributing them onto four knitting needles:

The number of loops is determined after manufacturing and measuring the sample. They are closed into a ring and the cuff fabric is knitted in circular rows. Depending on which pattern is chosen, the cuff can be made in the form of an elastic band or contain an ornament.

The description of the next stages will be illustrated with several photos. They have a short cuff made with 1:1 elastic. After its completion, to form the future wedge, you need to select one loop and, when knitting it, yarn over (1 before it and 1 after it). It will be more convenient to knit mitts if the center loop is the second from the edge of any knitting needle.

When knitting yarn overs in the next row, openwork holes should not be allowed to appear. To do this, twist the yarn over loop.

Similar additions must be made in every third row. You can finish knitting the wedge when its height is equal to A.

In parallel with the production of the wedge, a pattern is formed on one side of the mitt. In the photo below, a fairly simple pattern is used, the pattern of which consists of alternately knitting the front and purl loops with an offset in every third row. As a result, the “columns” of the front elements are placed in a checkerboard pattern.

The loops of the finished wedge are removed using an auxiliary tool. This could be a knitting needle, pin or thread.

Then knitting the product continues in the round. To form a hole for the finger, you need to pick up the missing loops. Their number should be equal to half of the elements removed on the pin. They recruit them using working thread.

In the process of knitting the following circular rows, the number of links in the fabric is reduced until the width of the product is equal to C. Reductions are made sequentially over several rows in the section of the product above the wedge.

Circular rows continue until the length of the product is B. Then the loops are closed.

The description of thumb knitting corresponds to that described in the video. It can be performed on two or four knitting needles. The first circular row is based on stitches cast on a pin and those picked up around the circumference of the hole.

The width of the fabric should be equal to D. The height of the knitted fabric is usually 2-3 cm.

The simplest method of knitting mitts

To make the task easier for yourself, you can use the master class described in the video, but make the hole for the thumb in a completely different way. The pattern for decorating hand-knitted mitts can be almost anything.

The peculiarity of the method is that after finishing knitting the cuff, you should switch from circular knitting to return rows. Thus, straight fabric is knitted to a height equal to A. Then circular knitting is resumed and the mitt is knitted to the end.

Another option that allows you to get mitts with a vertical hole for the thumb is to knit an even fabric on two knitting needles. When stitching it, an unsewn section is left, the length of which is equal to A. The result of the work is a product with a kind of “gap” for the thumb.

Knit 4 rows in the round, then close.

Ring finger
