Although John Cusack’s film biography includes more than seven dozen roles, most often for some reason we remember this name in connection with the action movie “Con Air.” Needless to say, it’s a cult film, and Cage and Cusack look great in it. By the way, John has a black belt in kickboxing, so he rightfully became an action hero.

Biography of John Cusack

Five actors from the same family

The large family of Richard (Dick) and Nancy Cusack lived in Illinois (Evanston). The future famous artist John Paul Cusack was born there on June 28, 1966. His mother was a math teacher, but all five of her children - two sons, Bill and John, and three daughters, Anne, Joan, Susie - decided to choose acting as a profession. The fact is that the head of the family was a creative person, he directed advertising films and documentaries, and once even received an Emmy.

John's older sisters attended drama school, and he also went there at the age of eight, although he did not feel much enthusiasm for it. In his dreams, John was already a famous baseball player. But family traditions took over. As a three-year-old boy, John took part in the amateur performances of the tireless Ann, and a little later he played in a production based on Chekhov’s story “Darling.”

A failure that could have cost your career

His father encouraged twelve-year-old John to be hired at the radio station - he has excellent diction, so the schoolboy could replace the announcer when necessary and read the advertisement expressively. Two years later he got into the local theater, and then his first film role appeared in the biography of John Cusack - Roscoe in Carlino’s comedy melodrama “Class”. The aspiring actor played in several more youth films, including the cult drama by John Hughes “Sixteen Candles” and the drama based on King “Stand By Me,” but the roles were episodic.

But John experienced a real shock from his debut leading role. He starred in Holland's comedy Better Off Dead and was glad that he was finally playing solo. However, he was completely horrified when he saw the finished material. It seemed to John that he was a completely worthless actor, and the script was rubbish. He is still ashamed of this work. Such a failure could affect further creative biography John Cusack, but he pulled himself together and began looking for new projects.

Career peak: the actor's best works

In 1989, Cameron Crowe’s film “Say Anything” was released, the role in which could have gone to another young artist, but Lloyd Dobler was played by Cusack, and he played it very well. Then everything was even more successful - the role of a swindler in the comedy thriller "Scammers" by Stephen Frears (in which John's partners were Annette Bening and Anjelica Huston), the sparkling crime-mafia film "Bullets over Broadway" by Woody Allen, "The Road to Wellville" by Alan Parker.

But the brightest page in John Cusack’s biography remains the year 1997. It was then that two of his works appeared at the box office - the already mentioned Con Air, a box office hit for Simon West, and the gangster comedy The Grosse Pointe Murders. If the first revealed the artist’s dramatic gift, then in the second (in which he appeared in the role of a failed killer), the performer had to show all the facets of his talent.

One step before universal catastrophe

In the late 1990s, John played in films of various genres: Eastwood's noir "Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil", the war drama "The Thin Red Line", the surreal parable "Being John Malkovich", a melodrama about a guy going through a breakup with his girlfriend , "Fanatic".

The horror films “Identity” and “1408” (based on the plot of Stephen King) became the highlight of Cusack’s filmography. However, sentimental people would prefer not such a scary movie, but the rom-com “Intuition”, in which Kate Beckinsale played along with John.

Roland Emmerich’s large-scale film “2012” could not go unnoticed, in which the director, with his characteristic scope, showed a shocking picture of the death of our world. Cusack's hero Jackson Curtis found himself in the midst of a disaster, but the ending of the film gave the public hope. The blockbuster earned $788 million.

Founder of the detective and psychotherapist

It's a pity that viewers didn't appreciate the dark thriller "The Raven", which shows last days the founder of the detective genre, Edgar Allan Poe. The authors put forward an interesting version - after all, it is still unclear what killed the writer.

Among the latest film works, we note a satire on the Hollywood way of life from the cult Canadian director Cronenberg - “ Star map", in which Cusack portrayed a famous and highly sought-after psychotherapist who benefits celebrities. The film was included in the competition program of the Cannes Film Festival and brought Julianne Moore the prize for Best Actress.

Passionate fan

His dreams of becoming a baseball player did not come true, but John remains a devoted fan of the Chicago Cubs and Chicago White Sox. He also loves hockey and often sits in the stands during the Stanley Cup Final, rooting for the Chicago Blackhawks. He himself practiced kickboxing for more than twenty years under the guidance of a former world champion and received a black belt.

Stalking a fan

In the spring of 2008, a curious event occurred in John Cusack’s personal life - he was “attacked” by one of his fans, Emily Leatherman. She bombarded her idol with letters of declarations of love and threatened to “take extreme measures.” In March of the same year, police arrested Emily near Cusack's mansion in Malibu. She received a suspended sentence of five years and was ordered to undergo psychiatric counseling and stay away from Cusack and his home for ten years.

John Cusack never shares details of his personal life with the press; at fifty years old, he has never been married and has no children.

Workaholic's Weekend

March 2012. Chicago
John rolled his suitcase out of the terminal's glass sliding doors, leaving behind him the hustle and bustle of the world's third-busiest airport. He took a deep breath of the spring air of the Windy City and broke into a smile like a Cheshire Cat. Maybe not for long, but he returned home...

John has been living in Los Angeles for a long time, closer to the heart of the film industry. But he returns to his native Chicago for a break every time he feels sick from Hollywood morals - in other words, often. Here he has his own apartment in a high-rise residential complex, his mother, sisters, brother, and nephews live nearby. His father, actor and director Richard Cusack, is buried in Chicago.

Leaning back on the worn back of the taxi sofa, John regretted that he no longer felt as free here as before. “When I was young, I swore I would never move to Los Angeles,” says the actor. “But when you're famous, it's not easy to live anywhere else.” In other cities, people are not used to seeing film actors on the streets - you become a tourist attraction, constantly finding yourself in the center of noise and excitement. For example, I like to spend my evenings in sports bars, but in Chicago I can’t afford it. Here celebrity and alcohol in the same room are a sure way to the pages of a tabloid.”

John hates the hype famous people: “I experience a healthy fear of my status, the need to give interviews and participate in talk shows. For me, the cult of stars means the extinction of actors. The more people know about you as a person, the less they want to watch you in movies and believe the images you create. My principle: do your job and run into the shadows.”

For the last year and a half, John worked without a break, he was tossed from winter, cold and snowy Serbia to hot, swampy Louisiana. Serbia, where a significant part of “The Crow” was filmed, was vaguely remembered. In the heavy atmosphere of the Balkan winter, crushed by a low leaden sky, surrounded on all sides by gray snowdrifts and bare trees stretching gnarled fingers-branches towards him, John, out of nervousness, almost stopped eating and sleeping. In the end, fatigue brought him to an almost feverish state: he became emaciated, fell into depression and lost his orientation in space.

Upon completion of filming, having arrived in Los Angeles, John got lost at the airport and was forced to go to the information desk with an anecdotal question: “Can you tell me what city this is?”

By the time he started working on the film “The Paperboy,” he had come to his senses a little. But it turned out that in Louisiana, too, John had to suffer for his art: spend several days in a swamp with crocodiles under his feet and mosquitoes above his head. “Compared to mosquitoes, crocodiles behaved like angels,” the actor later said. “Jokes aside, these two films seriously lay claim to being the hardest films of my career.”

But instead of resting, John was faced with the Crow advertising campaign. He traveled around Europe, reaching Moscow. Where, too, there were some adventures. The actor’s visit coincided with the Russian presidential elections, a rally on Pushkin Square and the celebration of the International women's day. At first, John barely made it through the closed city center to The Ritz-Carlton hotel, and in the following days he had difficulty getting out of it... But this did not stop the actor from fulfilling his old dream and going to the Mikhail Bulgakov Museum. When John stood in the middle of the “bad apartment” and then walked through the park on the Patriarch’s Ponds, it seemed to him that he was about to be sucked into the novel “The Master and Margarita.” “I believe in mysticism,” says Cusack. “Things have happened to me that cannot have a rational explanation.” I often wake up in the middle of the night with the thought: something happened to someone I know or will happen soon. And this inexplicable radar, as a rule, does not deceive me.”

Fear of first dates

At home, John sat for a long time in the bedroom in front of his open suitcase, thinking where he should start his well-deserved rest. “Nobody plans anything in Chicago,” he says lovingly about his small homeland. “You just go out into the street, meet people you know, and everything gets resolved.”

John wasn't sure he was ready to plunge straight into social life. But he desperately wanted, as in his youth, to ride around the city on a bicycle. He lived in the house of his sister, actress Joan Cusack, where John was going to visit in the very near future.
“My sister basically doesn’t talk to her relatives on the phone,” John laughs. “That’s why we get together more often than most families.” If you need to talk to Joan about something, you have to find ways to do it in person.”

Joan spent younger brother into the kitchen where her family, her husband Richard and sons, were having lunch. Another plate and cutlery immediately appeared on the table.
“Johnny, I’ve been saying for a long time that you should give up on Hollywood and go home,” Joan said when dinner resumed. - You'll save on air tickets.

“No, thank you, I still love my job,” the actor objected. — By the way, you would get more good roles if you moved there. You are losing a lot because you are stuck more than three thousand kilometers away from all the most interesting things.

“Two small children make life quite interesting,” Joan shrugged. - If you had your own family, you would know this. I don't want your obsession with work to lead you to a lonely old age.

John sighed. IN lately family pressure regarding his bachelor life gained incredible momentum. However, no one really counted on success, because in the family John had long been recognized as a great original. “I was glad that John started acting in films in adolescence, - my father once said. “He still didn’t do anything that a normal teenager should do.” He came to life only in the theater studio, and the rest of the time he wandered gloomily around the house.”

John does not agree with his father's words. But when asked to remember his youthful pranks, all that comes to mind are trips with friends to Lake Tahoe to buy hallucinogenic mushrooms. “I dabbled in this from the age of 19 to 27,” admits the actor. - Then I decided to switch to entertainment, which
don’t have such a big impact on your health.”

“Don’t look at me as if I’m against the family,” he said to his sister when the boys ran away from the table to play in their room. “I just haven’t found a woman with whom I want to not only give birth, but also raise these hypothetical children.”

“You won’t find it in Hollywood.” — Joan looked tenderly at her husband, a Chicago lawyer who had nothing to do with show business. “That’s why I want you to stop traveling around the world, at least settle down in Chicago for a while and look for a wife here.”

- How do you imagine this? - John asked, wincing. - There is nothing more pathetic and disgusting than a 45-year-old man who picks up girls in bars.

- John, there are many in the world different women and a lot different ways“Meet them,” Joan smiled.

Cusack nodded grimly. He always preferred office romances casual dating because I’m not good at first dates. “I have dozens, if not hundreds, of unsuccessful first dates behind me,” the actor complains. “I can’t even choose the worst.” It happened that I invited a woman to a restaurant, started entertaining her with a conversation, and suddenly realized that I had been talking alone for forty minutes, and she was looking at me with an uncomprehending look. It turned out that I forgot to place an order..."

John did not deny that the fear of the first date gradually ate into his soul and acquired the outlines of a phobia. But this hasn’t stopped him from living yet. He was not so tired of loneliness that he would willingly go through the nerve-wracking humiliation over and over again.

“I’ll think about it,” he said.

“You think too much and for too long, John, that’s your problem,” the older sister sighed tiredly.

Mister Comforter

The bicycle cheerfully carried John along places familiar to the last stone of the pavement. The port greeted with the smells of seaweed, wet iron and machine oil, the main shopping street - the Magnificent Mile - with the hum of voices and colorful shop windows. At the stadium, he waxed a little nostalgic about the times when, as a boy, he rode the train to baseball games, coins clutched in his fist. Cusack usually spent here not only the $1.50 given by his father for popcorn and a hot dog, but also money for the return trip. And I had to return as a hare.

Having driven under the green arches of the park, John finally switched to autopilot and began to ponder why nothing worthwhile had come of his Hollywood novels. Apparently, one of the reasons lay in his very specific reputation - rumors among actresses spread through word of mouth. John Cusack has somehow become labeled as the "great boyfriend in transit" with whom you can comfort yourself after a painful breakup, make another man jealous, or just pass the time until your next great love. What made John an invaluable friend was that ladies could pour out their souls to him without fear of unnecessary publicity.

If desired, one could even remember where such fame came from. Many years ago, while filming in Canada, actor Rob Lowe asked Cusack to look after his girlfriend, actress Melissa Gilbert. While John took someone else's girlfriend to museums and fed him lunches, Rob began an affair with his co-star. Having learned about this, a tearful Melissa ran to complain to John. He began to console her - and before he knew it, he found himself in bed with her...

Who hasn’t he consoled since then! Meg Ryan cried her heart out on his shoulder after her breakup with Russell Crowe. And Uma Thurman even turned to John for sympathy twice - both after the first divorce and after the second.

Eventually, rumors about John's weakness for unhappy women leaked beyond the narrow Hollywood circles. In 2006, a certain girl of no fixed abode, who had suffered from male deceit, began writing love letters to him. She threw letters over the fence in bags, adding stones or screwdrivers as cargo. The girl was so confident that John would happily accommodate her that she began to consider his home and email addresses as hers, indicate them in documents and distribute them to friends. The actor had to go to court with a request to protect him from such manifestations of love.

Thus, John’s affairs with his colleagues always turned out to be short-lived and did not give a reason to think about marriage. Not one to take initiative, he agreed to the conditions that were offered to him and was quite pleased with the results. That’s why he was even confused when actress Neve Campbell appeared in his life. She didn't need consolation and seemed to simply enjoy his company. This was important for the actor. Shortly before meeting Neve, his former lover Minnie Driver told reporters that he was not at all as kind and decent as he wanted to appear. “Minnie said I was a pig around women,” said John, who was surprised to comment on his personal life for the first time in his life. - But, unfortunately, she says nasty things about all her former men. It's time for Minnie to realize that she's putting herself in a bad light, first and foremost."

The bad publicity that Minnie provided for John did not deter Neve. For four years, John courted his young lover according to all the rules, introduced her to her family and regularly took her on romantic vacations for two, but doubts prevented her from taking a decisive step towards the altar. “It can be difficult for men to come to terms with the fact that passion, brightness, and sharpness have left a relationship,” John explained. “It seems to us that problems arise because we have the wrong woman next to us, she doesn’t admire us the way we deserve.” Even if we understand with our minds that passion simply must degenerate into something more ordinary and calm, this is unpleasant for our ego.”

In addition, the lovers could not decide where to live. Anglophile Neve was obsessed with the dream of settling in Great Britain, and John had no idea what he would do there...

In doubts and reflections, the novel came to naught. But soon fate gave John another chance to find family happiness in the person of the star of the series “Detective Nash Bridges” Jodi Lyn O'Keefe. Jodie turned out to be more patient than Neve - she waited for a marriage proposal for seven years, but she also did not wait. “Jodie dreamed of living with John for the rest of her days, but even the most devoted girl cannot be in limbo forever,” the actress’s friends were indignant. “He doesn’t need marriage, and he’s not altruistic enough to make an effort on himself for the sake of another person.” Jodie gave him chance after chance until she realized she was wasting her energy.”

“When something happens to me, I always wonder whether it was the result of my actions or whether fate decided everything for me,” John philosophized. — How do you know if you are swimming on your own or if you are being carried by the current? And did you really want to end up where it took you? This is how I live, this is how my head works, and I am not offended by people who find it difficult to tolerate me and my eternal doubts.”

After Jodie, John no longer had any particular desire to have a serious relationship. The actor lived for the last year and a half without a girlfriend at all - and it cannot be said that he suffered greatly, felt deprived or inferior. “I’m a very lucky, happy person,” says Cusack. — I love my job, friends, family. In my youth, I thought that I had nothing but cinema. The thought that I would no longer be offered roles was scary. But since then my life has been filled with other things I love. I do kickboxing and write scripts. I am sure of one thing: as soon as a person understands that in fact his possibilities are unlimited, everything works out for him by itself.”

In the underground garage of his house, John fastened his bicycle to the metal railing and climbed up to his room, dreaming of a hot shower and a cup of strong coffee. He spent a few hours in his hometown, but already felt rested and much more optimistic than before. Maybe over time he will be able to not wait for everything to work out on its own, but follow Joan’s advice...

His gaze fell on the case with the laptop. John is not good with computers, but how could we forget about the theoretical possibility of meeting someone on the Internet?! Should you get to know a girl better before putting her and yourself to the test of meeting in person?

Over a cup of coffee, John tried to compose a message that he would not be ashamed to post on the Internet. “Something absurd and funny,” he said mentally. “I’ll probably like a person who can answer with a good joke and support the game.” And if I need to describe myself, I’ll do it like this: “A nice person who knows how to be nasty sometimes.”
